Golden Boy's Black Eye

As predictable as the fight between Mayweather & Marquez was, no one could predict the post fight mayhem that nearly occurred caused by 2 aged fighters looking for their next payday. After Floyd Mayweather made his triumphant return to the squared circle, Sugar Shane Mosley & Bernard the Executioner Hopkins made it a point to rush the ring, during Mayweather's post fight interview, to ambush Floyd into his next fight.

Lets get to the results first, Mayweather looked as brilliant as he ever has in his career. For all the talk you hear about Floyd "running" during fights, believe me, its well overblown. Floyd knocked down Marquez in round 2 & was dominant the rest of the fight. Mayweather connected at such a high punch percentage, that one of my friend (Jungi) commented, "I've never seen a boxer punch at such a high rate connect percentage." This was BEFORE the stats were out mid way through the 6th round. The end result for Mayweather was a percentage advantage of (get this...I will bold it so you get the disparity) 59% connection rate to a misely 12% for Marquez...for those of you who aren't math majors, that adds up to a complete white washing of what was supposed to be the #2 pound for pound boxer in the game after a 21 month lay off...Marquez, who in 2 fights gave Manny Pacquiao all he could handle, got SHUTOUT by a boxer who hadn't fought in nearly 2 years. Marquez only connected on 69 punches THE ENTIRE FIGHT...7 % on Jabs & only 16% on "power punches."

The post fight interview by Max Kellerman was pretty uneventful...until Shane Mosley uncharacteristically interrupted the interview, to basically challenge Mayweather for a fight. Uncharacteristically because Shane is a respectful boxer, who has never been the least bit controversial (for the exception of some steroid accusations). Backed by Bernard Hopkins (both of Golden Boy Promotions) Shane simply said, "This is a fight people want to see, I just want to get it on." Mayweather, upset by his moment of glory being interrupted said, "Don't interrupt my interview. Respect me as a MAN!!! With that said, Max Kellerman tried to defuse the situation, tried changing the subject before Floyd grabbed the mic from him & said. "let me talk, cause you're doing a little too much of the talking." Kellerman then signed off & the telecast went back to Jim Lampley at ringside. The interview was so eventful, that no one bothered to interview the loser, Juan Manuel Marquez, who actually approached Lampley & Kellerman at ringside while Mayweather walked back to the locker room.

As Mayweather walked backstage, the chorus of boos followed, but it went beyond that, as you heard numerous fans yell "FUCK YOU MAYWEATHER, FUCK MAYWEATHER." Mind you this was in Las Vegas, considered a "home field" for Floyd. Even after the Marquez interview, the story was the disrespect shown by Mosley & Hopkins, 2 veteran fighters, toward the UNDISPUTED, pound for pound king of boxing. To me, that's not how you ask for a fight. Mayweather's dazzling display, may have been overshadowed by what can only be described as a classless act by the new GOONS of Golden Boy Promotion.

Maybe this was boxing's way of taking some of the spotlight away from UFC (who had an event running against boxing tonight). However, this was a pretty TASTELESS MOVE by Mosley, Hopkins, De La Hoya, Golden Boy, & any one else involved. Usually fans would jump on the side of the boxer disrespected (in this case Mayweather), but Mayweather's arrogance & brilliance attracts more hatred than any athlete in recent memory, so most will find it funny. In a sport where no one can seem to touch him, Floyd looked semi-vulnerable for the first time in his career inside the ring. Although this Saturday, was the closest Mosley will get to touching him in the ring. If the fight ever happens Mosley-Mayweather it will be Floyd's biggest challenge. In the end, Floyd will leave all fans like he usually leaves them. In sheer shock that anyone can be THIS RADIANT, against the supposed best in the sport, without breaking a sweat.

  1. Boxing is just like the WWF, made-up. So Floyd Mayweather, did not make the weight for the fight, so he heavier than the weight class that he is fighting in, and his opponent was older, shorter and weigh less. Are we impressed that he won, what a charade. Now we find out that this piece of work owes our government millions of dollars. Why should we believe this guy? I guess the rumors are true that he did everything to avoid fighting Antonio Margarito, before his unexpected first retirement, chicken.

  2. Actually Paul, he wasn't heavier than the weight class he was fighting in. the weight class limit was 147, there was an agreement to fight at 144, with a loophole connected to a payout of $300K per pound. & the weight was really irrelevant in the Marquez fight & here's why...Marquez couldn't touch him. In Boxing when you can't hit your opponent, YOU CAN'T WIN...

Mayweather is driven by money. So the rumors of avoiding Margarito (which I never heard him avoiding) was money related. There was no money in that fight. Money aside, he almost has to take a fight with Mosley to avoid being called as you say, chicken. As far as his finances I don't know what he owes the government or if he does. What I do know is Mayweather is a gifted boxer, who for one reason or another, will never get full credit for dominating boxers like he does.

  3. Skinny:
    a) Fight day, (right after the fight), news headlines: Mayweather to pay 5.6 Million in Back Taxes

    b) In 2005 he was offered $4 mil by his old boss (Bob Arum) to fight Margarito...he took $8 million to fight tCarlos Baldomir (gets the money but has not learned to managed it).

What I saw was an immature “Floyd Mayweather”, whose immaturity seems to stem from being too much like his father (watch his dad’s interview). I saw the fight, yes he won by decision, a cream would have been a clear knockout, did not happen. The rules say you can only fight in your weight class, but no one enforces them. The law says pay your taxes, but people find ways of avoiding them. I guess I look back and ask myself would “Muhammad Ali”, come to a fight weighing over the agreed weight class? Or would “Muhammad Ali”, be caught not paying his taxes? I think we both know the answers to these questions. Muhammad Ali, is a great sportsman, but Floyd Mayweather, is just immature. He is all about the money and in the end that’s all people will remember. We both know that any thug can grow-up to be that. Now if boxing is all about drama and smack talks, well then you now understand my WWF comment. Now if boxing is all about drama and smack talk, well then you now understand my WWF comment.

  4. where do I start.

1)The comparison I made with Ali was on how Mayweather promoted himself & the sport. Mayweather single-handedly made this event sell over 1 million ppv buys. like him or not, that's impact. has nothing to due with him evading taxes like he evades boxers in the ring. but since we are on the subject of Ali, Muhammad Ali fought at Heavyweight...you can weight whatever you want. so weighing in has & remains moot for heavyweight. also didn't Ali go to jail for avoiding the draft? & talk about smack talker. Ali once went to his opponents (Sonny Liston) house & called him out. challenged him to a fight right there. in the street. so kindly step off your high horse. Ali & Mayweather are showmen...salesmen to their sport. & the 1 million ppv buys proves it

    2) i'm not a moralist. if he's evading taxes that's between him & the government. an issue that as you say, has been apparently handled since floyd & uncle sam have come to an agreement. personally his tax issues doesn't take away from his in the ring skills. if you want to use that to soil his immense talent go ahead sir.

3)The weight class they fought in was 147. he was not over 147. so techinically he wasn't over weight. he was over the agreed weight & it was allowed by Marquez with an agreed payout. Marquez could have cancelled the fight if he wanted to, he chose not to. again, the weight made no difference since Marquez didn't touch Mayweather. Weight in this fight was a moot point

4)of course he took the most money. if someone offered you double of what another promoter is offering you for the same job, would you seriously take the lesser offer? to quote you, "I think we both know the answer to that question"

5)mayweather is all about the money, i said as much in my first response. who isn't? are you not about the money? i know i am. fans seem to think athletes owe them. THEY DON'T!!! athletes are ego driven money hungry humans. this shouldn't be news to you. if you feel mayweather owes you a fight against whoever you deem worthy that's a YOU problem. fact is he doesn't owe you or anyone anything other than his best in ring performance against his opponents
