I was speechless. Rivera pitched his way out of a bases loaded situation unblemished on the scoreboard, but tarnished when it comes to his image in the eyes of some. How will this affect his credibility? I'm sure the Angels will watch this closely the rest of the series, but how long has Rivera been doing this is the question? Rivera is obviously a student of the "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" school of thought. Professor Gaylord Perry would definitely be proud. I'm not sure if this taints Rivera's immaculate legacy, but if I wanted to I could definitely spit on it.

Oh man wait til I show this to Milton. He is going to flip. This is great. Thanks again for the heads up.Please bring this up on Wednesday on the show. This is going to be another classic reaction from Mo. HA!
ReplyDeleteBetween regular season and postseason, Mariano has thrown around 1200 innings in his career, of which I've probably watched 95% of them. I've seen him spit like that all the time, but never once did I see him spit on the ball. Nor have I ever heard one whisper about him throwing a spit ball.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he did, but my money would be on an illusion created by camera angles.
camera angle? Kosmo he clearly spit on the ball. there was no illusion that made spit come from his mouth & land on the ball as it did. maybe the spit explains all the cut action Mariano had on the throw to 3rd base
ReplyDeleteHow does spit help throw a cutter? It's all about getting a good grip on the ball to throw it.
ReplyDeleteWhy would Mo stand there, facing the entire field and spit on the ball while at his waist? Hard to believe that if he was cheating he would be so obvious about it.
Mo has been on the national stage for 15 years. How have all those eyes missed something like this until yesterday?
I've watched that video over and over and over and there is no conclusive evidence of the spit actually hittiin the ball. If anything I believe the spit actually went behind his hand. Either way there is no where near enough evidence to label him a "cheater." Just the typical knee jerk reaction to label something because it is the "sensational" story.
Kosmo if spitting on the ball doesn't help him then why is he spitting on the ball? it doesn't matter if he's been on the national stage for 15 years. last night he was caught red handed. no camera tricks, he clearly spit in the direction of the ball & the spit landed on the ball...maybe he got some on his wrist. but clearly, he got the desired intent.
ReplyDeleteClearly, this is not a "knee jerk" reaction on my part. after me & a friend saw the incident, i waited a full 12 hours before even publishing this. I even published something else before this story. so clearly, what this seems like to me is the court of public opinion is making this into a "sensational" story
He wasn't caught red handed. Show me the camera shot of the spit on the ball.
ReplyDeleteHeck you even purposely left out the screen shot where what appears to be spit is obviously the Majestic logo and sleeve stripes on Scioscia's uniform as it faded to the shot of the Angel's dugout.
If the spit didn't hit you must acquit.
ReplyDeleteKosmo I did no such thing. that next shot was fading into the shot of Scossia in the dugout, it was unnecessary to post. At no point did i say "you can see the spit emanating from the ball as it makes contact with it." the pictures are there so you can make your own judgment whether he did spit on the ball or not. the video & the pictures speak for themselves. i'm not saying he's done it for 15 years, but he certainly did last night
ReplyDeleteRight, and that's the shot that shows that what appears to possibly be spit landing on the ball is in reality the markings from Scioscia's jersey. It is most certainly necessary to show that screen shot.
ReplyDeleteno one in their right minds would confuse the shadows of Scioscia's white uniform for spit. you're just trying to hold onto to some shred of insignificance in attempt to salvage what was once a flawless career
ReplyDeleteThen why not show the image? All you have to do is take a look at this screen shot and it is obvious that what appears to be spit landing on the ball is not:

unbelievable...2 people voted egregious (probably yankee fans). the only thing egregious about this is how Mariano spit on the ball. & MLB already announced they'll do nothing...surprise surprise!!!
ReplyDeleteKosmo thanks for contributing that useless angle that proves absolutely nothing to the blog.
ReplyDeleteJosh, of course MLB will do nothing. MLB had more evidence than this that kenny rogers was scuffing the ball in the 2006 World Series & did nothing.
ReplyDeleteSo hard evidence doesn't matter?
ReplyDeleteDestroying someone's impeccable reputation because two dudes sitting on a couch rewinding a DVR think they see spit hitting a ball is much more credible than thinking logically about what might have really happened?
But that doesn't make for as good a story does it?
what hard evidence? the only hard evidence is him spitting on the ball, that 6th fade out shot doesn't prove anything. no one is depending on the 5th angle to determine whether he spit on the ball. spit that came from his actual mouth deflected off the ball he was holding & intended to through. look at the video man he spit on the ball. 2 guys on a couch didn't make this the story, mariano spitting on a ball during a nationally televised event made this a story.
ReplyDeletebut go ahead, blame the media. they are the perfect scapegoats
Ahhh, the media's typical cliche response to any critiscm of their job, "Blame us, we're the easy scapegoat."
ReplyDeleteNah, they're not trying to make a story out of nothing. That never happens. Heck, how many of them even know what a spitball actually does?
it doesn't matter what a spitball does. it's been against the rules since 1920. if a spitball does nothing why did he spit on the ball?
ReplyDeleteWell, my contention is that he didn't actually spit on the ball. The fact that what Mo throws does not act like a spitball added to the fact that he is by no means clearly spitting on the ball does matter. A reasonable person should be able to look at both these facts and come to the conclusion that it is highly improbable that Mo was trying to cheat.
ReplyDeleteSure, I'm a Yankee fan, and to some degree biased about Mo, but given the fact that there has never been even the slightest blemish on his character I would kind of hope that people would have been much more suspicious of the motives involved by this Angel fan's blog post instead of immediately labeling Mo a cheater and trying to tarnish his career.
i can't speak for other blogs. i'm not an Angels fan, i'm not a Yankees fan. so i don't have a pony in this race. the way i saw it last night, Mariano Rivera spit on a baseball. will it ruin his legacy? that is for every individual reader to decide.
ReplyDeleteYo, Kosmo. I totally spit on that ball. And when I have to pitch to Philly, I'll have to do it way more often.
